Today a police officer gave me a ticket for “graffiti”… for chalk art on the wall of a McDonald’s building.
Unfortunately there wasn’t enough time to finish the message… “SLOW DOWN! Think about where your food comes from”.
I’ve been interested in the idea of chalk art as ‘graffiti’ for a while. It is a cheap, sustainable, impermanent form of communication. This was an experiment that honestly didn’t cross our minds as ‘vandalism’. What if a kid colored their walls with chalk? Is it still graffiti/vandalism? Is it determined by intention? I don’t know. I also find the concept of ‘property’ to be really strange. I think the only true ‘property’ we own are our bodies. The earth belongs to everyone. If nothing else, I hope this little issue sparks discussion about the way we define art and vandalism, and about the dangers of the fast food industry. We all know it’s unhealthy, but more than that, we should think about where our food comes from and what sacrifices are being made. Think about the way our consumption is rapidly depleting finite resources and destroying the world that we are one with. I’m interested in your thoughts! Much love :)
